"Scholar Athlete a Oxymoron?"

After reading a blog by Stan Katz, I enjoyed what he said. He talked about his own experience growing up watching the Bears and the Cubs. The problem I have is not in the term "Scholar Athlete" in itself, but in the context it is in. If an athlete who is smart, and gets a degree in a specified study, then why not be called a scholar athlete? I think the term is overly used and should only be used when true.
